Prosperity is an obvious goal for businesses, but creating a happy, healthy work environment is also a common concern. In 1997, Cannon began work with Florida-based Sterling Financial Investment Group. People laughed when they saw the crystal balls hanging everywhere and us doing the meditations [to activate the feng shui], says Charles Garcia, Sterling s 38-year-old founder and CEO. Carol has done a fabulous job of energizing my whole office - people are happy to work here. And that s good for everyone. Happy employees are productive employees, says Cannon, who charges $150 an hour to identify areas where energy - and with it strength - might flow away from a home or business and to advise fixes, like hanging wind chimes, plants, crystals or a red string to help redirect the flow in a positive way. Often a rearrangement of the furniture, or the building layout as in Melby s case, is the solution. Sterling s bottom line appears to prove Cannon s point about the relationship between energy flow and productivity. She s seen Sterling shoot from an annual gross revenue of $80,000 in 1997 to $4 million last year, with projected revenues of $20 million in 2000. She was involved from the very beginning, says Garcia. I ve grown from 3 people to 300 since I first met Carol. Greater profits may be the spur to star feng shui aficionados like Donald Trump and the Hong Kong Bank, but for Canon s clients it s more complicated. I think a lot of people use it because they think they can make more money using it, says David Benjamin, an architect and archaeologist whose Fort LauderdaCHNKINK 4øÿÿÿÿTEXTTEXTª)FDPPFDPP,FDPCFDPC.STSHSTSH0STSHSTSH02SYIDSYIDP0SGP SGP d0INK INK h0BTEPPLC l0BTECPLC „0FONTFONTœ0<STRSPLC Ø0:PRNTWNPR1FRAMFRAM*3ˆTITLTITL²3DOP DOP Ä3" Craig Melby couldn t explain why he was uncomfortable with the layout of the mountain lodge he s having built in North Carolina, but something about the plans didn t feel right. He ll be using the lodge as a retreat for family, church and corporate rental use. He s making it as energy efficient as possible, using concrete and styrofoam to insulate the walls and capitalizing on the passive solar energy available on the mountainside. I want the place to feel right in every way, says the commercial real-estate consultant and tenant-representative based in South Florida. He consulted several architects and made a few changes, but it wasn t until feng shui artist Carol Cannon reviewed the plans that he breathed a sigh of relief. Following the precepts of feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement to ensure good fortune, health and prosperity by manipulating the flow of energy in an area, Cannon advised Melby to move the staircase, which opened near the front entry and descended to bedrooms below, and to reposition the building so the driveway would be level with the lodge, not above the building as planned. She said it was bad feng shui for people to see this hole leading down when they first walk in, Melby says. We re rearranging. Don t call me a lunatic but I m going to be safe rather than sorry. What she said validated what my subconscious was telling me. Cannon, a charter member of the Feng Shui Guild, says she s seeing more and more corporate clients - that as much as 70 percent of her business is commercial. Feng shui has gained steadily in popularity since being introduced to the western U.S. by Chinese immigrants, first for home and personal use, now as a business strategy. In July, Cannon feng shui d the sle company, Third Planet, helps corporations and builders apply environmentally friendly practices to their design plans. That doesn t decrease the benefits, but it seems rather shallow. There are also spiritual benefits tied into Chinese medicine and martial arts - it s all integrated into the system. Still since he had his offices analyzed this year, Benjamin has seen an increase in relationships among clients, who are potential donors to the non-profit consultancy division of his business, which helps native societies in Caribbean and South American countries. Despite the conclusions one might draw from Sterling s flourishing bottom line and Third Planet s glowing reports, Benjamin, Melby and Garcia agree financial gain isn t the best reason for bringing feng shui into a business. I m not going to say that money isn t important. When you re running an organization money is very important - otherwise you d have to close up, says Benjamin. But when money is the whole motive, people are missing a greater sense of wholeness in life. If they have the consciousness that they re doing [feng shui] for medical purposes or to increase their sensitivity to spirituality, that opens up a whole other part of their life. His goal, like many who embrace feng shui in the office, is to create harmony in the environment with the positive flow of energy that helps employees and clients feel their best. The benefits just spread from there. Trish Riley is a Florida journalists specializing in environmental, business, real estate and travel stories.
